How to Make Federal Tax Payments Online

At The Mather Group, LLC (TMG), we encourage our clients make all federal tax payments online via the direct-pay function on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website. Why is this our recommendation?

You can avoid writing checks, using stamps and envelopes, and
relying on a postal or parcel delivery service.

All you need is private internet access to make safe and secure
online payments.

You can schedule secure online payments to be made automatically
on specific days of your choosing, up to one year in advance.

The IRS website is equipped to handle many different types of federal tax payments. Follow the instructions below to initiate the most common types of payments.

Click the button above or click here to start.

Select “Pay Individual Tax”
Select the “Make a Payment” button.
Use the following instructions as appropriate.

For Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

  • Reason for Payment: Select “Estimated Tax” from the drop-down
  • menu.
  • Apply Payment To: 1040ES (for 1040, 140A, 1040EZ)
  • Tax Period for Payment: Select the relevant tax year from the drop-down menu.
  • Click “Continue.”

Return Extension

  • Reason for Payment: Select “Extension” from the drop-down menu.
  • Apply Payment To: 4868 (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)
  • Tax Period for Payment: Select the relevant tax year from the drop-down menu
  • Click “Continue.”

Final Return

  • Reason for Payment: Select “Balance Due” from the drop-down menu.
  • Apply Payment To: Select “Income Tax – Form 1040” from the
    drop-down menu.
  • Tax Period for Payment: Select the relevant tax year from the
    drop-down menu.
  • Click “Continue.”
